The customer clicked the website.

Nothing looked obviously broken.

There was no warning.

No error message they understood.

Just...

Loading.

Loading.

Then they closed the tab.

To them, it looked like a slow website.

Behind the scenes, something much more important had failed.

Every Secure Website Starts With One Conversation

Before you ever see a secure website, two computers have a very short conversation.

Your browser says:

"Can I trust you?"

The website replies by presenting its digital identity.

If everything checks out, an encrypted connection is created.

Only then can information travel safely between you and the website.

This process is called the SSL (or TLS) handshake.

It usually takes less than a second.

Most people never realise it even happened.

But Sometimes...

The conversation never starts.

Or it starts...

...and fails.

Maybe:

• The certificate expired.

• The certificate wasn't installed correctly.

• The server configuration changed.

• A firewall interrupted the connection.

• The website was migrated incorrectly.

To the customer?

It just looks like:

"This website isn't working."
